Tips To Help You Cope
Living with COPD 0 CommentsAcceptance slowly weaves its way in and out during a healthy grieving process. Denial can be healthy as you react and adjust to the new information. However if you get stuck at one of these stages, problems can arise.
If you are having trouble getting past the grieving process, here are several things that might help.
Talk to someone
Expressing you feelings to family, friends, counselors, or clergy can often provide a relief and make feelings less intense. It is common to feel isolated after a diagnosis of COPD. You might want to appear strong in front of your family but always putting on a brave face can make it difficult to ask for help and can often lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. Try opening up to your family and friends about how COPD is affecting you emotionally. You may find it easier to cope when the people around you have a better understanding on what you are going through. Having some social interaction with your friends will also help keep your spirits up.
Consider asking your doctor about including counseling in your treatment plan. A good COPD treatment plan will cover both physical and mental health. Many people with COPD also find it beneficial to talk to other people who also have COPD. There are numerous online support groups where you can talk to people who have the same challenges as you. Other people with COPD can empathize with what you’re going through and give you tips on how to live with COPD. Ask you doctor to refer you to local support groups.
Stay active
Get dressed everyday even if you don’t plan on going out. It’s easier to motivate yourself to do tasks when you are dressed and ready for the day. Try to get outside and get some exercise, even if it is only for a few minutes. A little bit of fresh air can greatly improve your mood.
Stay occupied
Keep you head and hands occupied with a favourite hobby or activity you enjoy doing. If you have trouble with an activity you used to do, find a new one to enjoy. Focusing on positive, fun, activities will keep you from dwelling on the negative.
Meditate
Having COPD can be stressful physically and emotionally. Take time to relax to minimize the tension in your muscles and mind. There are many audiotapes you can find that can take you through guided imagery or progressive muscle relaxation techniques, which many people find helpful. Practicing proper diaphragmatic breathing while relaxing or meditating can also help relieve stress.
Get enough rest
Feeling good and learning how to live with COPD also involves making sure you are allowing yourself to rest between activities. You won’t tire and become frustrated as quickly and you’ll be able to do more of the things you want to do.
